Filters

So Many Choices…

Depending on your type of application/demands, there are different options for you to choose from. From a lower MERV rating (MERV 5) to a higher rating (MERV 18), from pleated to poly fiberglass filters, electronic, and reusable screen type filters. However, 90% of homes have a regular type filtering system (not electronic/or reusable) so we’re going to focus this blog on these disposable types.

Assuming you, and everyone at home have no serious allergies where extra measures need to be taken, I suggest using a basic pleated air filter (once every one to two months). As you will be catching most of the dust particles that travel through your HVAC system. A pleated air filter with a lower MERV rating (as compared to one with a higher rating) will be much LESS restrictive to your HVAC system- thus not over working it. REMEMBER an HVAC system needs proper circulation in order to work at its best.

Stay away from using Poly filters/fiberglass filters, as these do a poor job of catching the smaller dust particles. As an old partner of mine used to say, “poly filters are just good to catch dead birds and beer cans”. That comment may be an exaggeration but they certainly don’t do your equipment any justice as compared to a pleated filter.

Assuming you love your HVAC equipment and you want to treat it to a pleated filter (not a poly filter) for all its hard work and years of service, but you feel your system should be on filter with a HIGHER MERV rating due to allergy problems at home, I strongly suggest you replace them every month as they will catch much more dust particles and add to the resistance your blower motor has to work against. (in some cases a filter with a higher MERV rating can be so restrictive that it may overheat your furnace in winter time, and “freeze up” your cooling coil in summer time). Keep in mind!

So with this basic information in mind, do yourself and your HVAC equipment a favor and treat it to a better lifestyle! Treat your system fairly, and it shall do the same for you!

Got to “Got Filters” on menu bar to buy your filters now!

(Most homes should replace air filters at least once every two months. Ideally once a month.)(This is my professional opinion ONLY, use which ever air filters you feel comfortable using, this blog is just intended to shine some light on the subject.)
